Measuring business performance
What is the best way to measure all the different aspects
of your business' performance? This generally involves answering the following questions:
- What are we trying to determine with a particular measurement program? (The measurement objective)
- Which of several possible indicators will come closest to meeting our measurement objective?
- How do we ensure that people trust the measurements?
- What tools do we need to take the measurements?
- How do we ensure ongoing data quality?
- What IT support do we need to support the measurement program and create useful information and reports?
Measuring process performance
My clients also frequently ask me to help them improve the way they measure process performance. This frequently involves training process and production engineers in my Continuous Improvement of Measurement Systems course.
It also involves helping them design and analyse studies to quantify the accuracy,
precision, and drift of their measurement systems. This helps them decide whether
they should:
- Fix their existing measurement system
- Develop a new measurement system
- Continue using their existing measurement system but change the way they react to and use the measurements
